Hardwood floors, while beautiful, do require a bit of maintenance. Hardwood floors are susceptible to damage from furniture, wear and tear, pet nails and several other factors. With proper care and maintenance, your beautiful hardwood floors should last a long time while maintaining their natural beauty.
Before cleaning your hardwood floors, try to take as much furniture out of the room as possible. Be careful not to scratch your floors in the process. You may even want to consider adding felt pads to the bottom of your furniture in order to prevent scratches.
After you've removed all the larger pieces from the area, thuroughly sweep your floor to make sure you've picked up dirt and debris that will other wise get stuck to the floor once it is wet. You might want to consider vacuuming the floor if your vacuum has a hardwood setting. This is especially helpful in getting between the cracks of the hardwood.
Next, fill a bucket with a solution of mild soap and water. Ensure that the ratio is mostly water to soap. We like to use Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds specifically manufactured hardwood cleaner. Typically, we like to make sure the water is hot, but not scalding. Proceed to mop the floor using the solution. Let the cleaning solution stand for a few minutes before mopping with a mop in clean water. This will help to ensure any reside will be lifted.
Let the floors air dry, a ceiling fan and open windows will help to speed the process up.
