Hardwood floors, while beautiful, do require a bit of maintenance. Hardwood floors are susceptible to damage from furniture, wear and tear, pet nails and several other factors. With proper care and maintenance, your beautiful hardwood floors should last a long time while maintaining their natural beauty.
Before cleaning your hardwood floors, try to take as much furniture out of the room as possible. Be careful not to scratch your floors in the process. You may even want to consider adding felt pads to the bottom of your furniture in order to prevent scratches.
After you've removed all the larger pieces from the area, thuroughly sweep your floor to make sure you've picked up dirt and debris that will other wise get stuck to the floor once it is wet. You might want to consider vacuuming the floor if your vacuum has a hardwood setting. This is especially helpful in getting between the cracks of the hardwood.
Next, fill a bucket with a solution of mild soap and water. Ensure that the ratio is mostly water to soap. We like to use Dr. Bronner's Sal Suds specifically manufactured hardwood cleaner. Typically, we like to make sure the water is hot, but not scalding. Proceed to mop the floor using the solution. Let the cleaning solution stand for a few minutes before mopping with a mop in clean water. This will help to ensure any reside will be lifted.
Let the floors air dry, a ceiling fan and open windows will help to speed the process up.

Many homes have beautiful hardwood floors waiting to reemerge from underneath outdated vinyl tiles or carpet. We recently revived the hardwood floors in a Chicago kitchen. The client originally thought this would be a simple DIY project but then contacted us when it was a bit more than they could handle.
The client successfully pulled up the first layer of vinyl tile and pressboard. They were shocked to find that underneath there were two layers ancient vinyl tiles and tack paper. This makes 4 layers on top of the original hardwood floor.
Because of the age of the bottom layer of vinyl tiles, there was a concern of asbestos fibers being present. For this reason, they decided to call professionals.
Shortly after we arrived to finishing removing the original tiles, we encountered another problem.
A large area of the floor was missing where there was previously a wall. This photo was taken after the plaster had been removed from the hole. This presented a new challenge as now wood would have to be cut in order fit each individual space. Not a problem!
The entire process took a day to replace the missing boards, sand and stain and then a second day to dry completely.
Here is the finished product:

While you are able to successfully complete many home repairs on your own, sometimes it is best to hire a professional. DIY is gratifying and cost-effective, but can occasionally lead to chaos and overspending. Hiring a general contractor will help you complete your job professionally, and in a timely manner.
Here are some reasons why:
Experience - General Contractors have probably seen and managed a variety of different types of jobs through the years. Because of this, they have the experience to design, manage and execute your job with expertise.
Resources - Often, General Contractors have the resources that you do not have to complete a job. Whether this be employees, supplies or knowledge of the project.
Project Management - General Contractors are project managers. While they may subcontract the work, they can overall manage your project with ease.
License & Insurance - To work as a General Contractor, one will have insurance and a license- things that you would not necessarily have if you were the general contractor for a DIY home improvement project.
Knowledge - Many General Contractors have knowledge through experience. From building codes to acquiring permits to completing work to clean up. General Contractors will have a greater knowledge of this than a DIY-er.

This living room & dining room typical Chicago bungalow in Mayfair was in need of a fresh coat of paint. Originally, the walls were painted white. After usual wear & tear and nicotine staining, the walls needed a facelift to bring the living room and dining room to life.
It was much to the delight of Monticello Construction Services, LTD to learn that the ceilings were in near perfect condition. The space also had well intact dark wood trim. We were excited to get to work. The homeowners' chose Benjamin Moore Van Deusen Blue (HC-156) for both rooms. At first, there was a bit of hesitation because it is a dark color for a living room & dining room. They were anxious to see the transformation.
What a transformation! This particular shade of blue was indeed dark, it complimented the space really well in contrast to the white ceiling and dark trim.
